modern sculpture

Galería Casado Santapau, Madrid

20th January 2017 - 4th March 2017

In the late 1950s and the 1960s, abstract sculptors began to experiment with a wide array of new materials and different approaches to creating their works. Surrealist imagery, a minimalistic vocabulary, combinations of modern material and unusual surfaces became characteristic for the new modernist sculpture. Until today the subject of modernist sculpture is a central concern for many artists. The art works in the exhibition mix the formal language of modernist sculpture with a strong consciousness of the presence: modern sculpture.

Group exhibition with Alexandre Arrechea, Marc Bijl, Mike Bouchet, Madeleine Boschan, Aldo Chaparro, Sylvie Fleury, Andreas Golinski, Lothar Hempel, Gregor Hildebrandt, Tarik Kiswanson, Alicja Kwade, Mathieu Mercier, Gerold Miller, Przemek Pyszczek, Anselm Reyle, Gerwald Rockenschaub, Katja Strunz, Blair Thurman, Tatiana Trouvé, Xavier Veilhan, Claudia Wieser, Heimo Zobernig.

On the Subject of the Ready-made

Daimler Contemporary Berlin

25th November 2016 - 14th February 2017

For the exhibition ‘On the Subject of the Ready-made’ Bethan Huws has devised a location specific project, selecting examples of artwork from the Daimler Art Collection. Bethan Huws’ curatorial concept starts with Duchamp’s praxis of a combinatorial thinking, the inherent logic and the analytical wealth of allusions found in Duchamp’s conceptual approach. She represents these aspects through the visual neighborhood of artworks from one hundred years of art history, surprisingly juxtaposed so that they provide a commentary on one another. The exhibition’s title is a play-on-words on the famous dictum of Lautréamont: ‘As beautiful as the chance meeting on a dissecting-table of a sewing-machine and an umbrella’ (1874), which became a defining slogan of the Surrealists, and also anticipated the ready-made in linguistic form.

Gerold Miller | Krobath, Wien

Krobath, Wien/Vienna

19th November 2014 - 10th January 2015

Press release

Krobath Wien is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition of the Berlin based concept artist Gerold Miller on the occasion of Vienna Art Week on the 18th November 2014. Since the beginnings of his artistic career the artist follows an elegant strategy of stepping out of the picture, without never really leaving it.

The artist will present new Monoform and set works, especially ideated for the exhibition. Both groups of works represent his ongoing occupation with a radically reduced understanding of pictoriality, which he has formulated since the very beginnings of his artistic career. The recent series of Monoforms takes inspiration from some early works of this time. To date they are the most wide reaching steps taken on Miller's path to differentiate himself from the traditional format of the 'painting'.

The classic understanding of the 'picture' is streched to its extremity by the Monoforms. Consisting of two equally proportioned aluminum slats mounted in a right angle on the wall, they describe the boundaries of an imagined picture-space: the wall becomes a painting, and its borders become the object. The discovery of the picture-space is left to the imaginative power of the viewer. Gerold Miller nominates the wall as the 'final ground', over-stepping previous borders between abstract painting and minimalist sculpture to broaden the categories of the conceptual.

Gerold Miller's set test the limits of representation. They operate at the margins of plane and space, light and dark - or more precisely, at the margins of the visible. Large-scale black and blue monochrome surfaces absorb the viewer's gaze, the contrast of flat matt and lacquer gloss gives rise to illusionistic new spaces behind the picture surface. Overlapping areas of color draw the viewer out into new simulated spaces, which interplay and feedback to the surface.

According to Gerold Miller it may not be any longer the aim to invent new images. Rather, it is his intention to detach through the systematic reduction of artistic elements images from the remains of the visible and make them tangible.

Opening: 16th September 2014, 6 pm

Press release

Giacomo Guidi Arte Contemporanea is pleased to announce the opening of the new gallery space in Rome with an exhibition of the Berlin based artist concept artist Gerold Miller.

Gerold Miller will present new Monoform and set, especially ideated for the exhibition. Both groups of works represent his ongoing occupation with a radically reduced understanding of pictoriality, which he has formulated since the very beginnings of his artistic career.

The recent series of Monoform takes inspiration from Miller's early works of the 1990s. To date they are the most wide reaching steps taken on Miller's path to differentiate himself from the traditional format of the 'painting'.

The traditional understanding of the 'picture' is streched to its extremity by the Monoforms. Two equally proportioned aluminum angles are mounted parallel on the wall. They describe the boundaries of an imagined picture-space: the wall becomes a painting, and its borders become the object. The discovery of the picture-space is left to the imaginative power of the viewer. Gerold Miller nominates the wall as the 'final ground', over-stepping previous borders between abstract painting and minimalist sculpture to broaden the categories of the conceptual.

Gerold Miller's sets test the limits of representation. They operate at the margins of plane and space, light and dark - or more precisely, at the margins of the visible. Large-scale black monochrome surfaces absorb the viewer's gaze, the contrast of flat matt and lacquer gloss, grey and silver gives rise to illusionistic new spaces behind the picture surface. Overlapping areas of color draw the viewer out into new simulated spaces, which interplay and feedback to the surface.

Some more recent sets bridge to the Monoforms. Their white surface melts with the wall while the green marks/angles on the borders of the sets insinuate the possibility of opening or limiting the space of the picture. These works are iconic for Gerold Miller's conceptual understanding of the picture as something infinite that needs limits only to make it „tangible“.

Press release

For the tenth edition of Gallery Weekend Berlin, Mehdi Chouakri opens on May 2, 2014 a solo exhibition by the Berlin based artist Gerold Miller, titled Monoform.

Monoform is a new series of works which take inspiration from Miller's early works of the 1990s, and are to date the most wide reaching steps taken on Miller's path to differentiate himself from the traditional format of the 'painting'.

The Monoform works stretch the traditional understanding of the 'picture' to its extremity. Mounted parallel on the wall, the two equally proportioned aluminum angles describe the boundaries of an imagined picture-space: the wall becomes a painting, and its borders become the object. The discovery of the picture-space is left to the imaginative power of the viewer. Gerold Miller nominates the wall as the 'final ground', over-stepping previous borders between abstract painting and minimalist sculpture to broaden the categories of the conceptual.

The second group of works shown belong to Miller's set. series, in which he tests the limits of representation. These works operate at the margins of plane and space, light and dark - or more precisely, at the margins of the visible. Large-scale black monochrome surfaces absorb the viewer's gaze, the contrast of flat matt and lacquer gloss giving rise to illusionistic new spaces behind the picture surface. Overlapping areas of color draw the viewer out into new simulated spaces, which interplay and feedback to the surface.

Monoform and set. both represent Gerold Miller's ongoing occupation with a radically reduced understanding of pictoriality, which he has formulated throughout his artistic career. Specifically this engages with a process of systematic reduction of the creative medium to give rise to an ascertainable picture form.

The exhibition Monoform will be accompanied by a full-color catalogue.

"For more than 20 years the work of Berlin artist Gerold Miller has been characterized by an extremely stringent, radical minimalist concept.

As far as he has developed a distinctive formal repertoire, the artist deals with questions of representativeness on the border between sculpture, delimited wall surfaces and painting.

In the gallery Giacomo Guidi Arte Contemporanea Gerold Miller presents a group of works especially conceived for his first solo show in Rome, that belongs to his most recent series of art works called Set. On the way from sculpture to painting, Set works overlay the real surface of the image with that of illusionistic painting."

Not only in art but also in the art history red earns a prominent position. Red refers to vital fields of humans living and with no any other color there are so many emotions connected: from love, to shame and rage.

The Collection presentation Rotesque exhibit artistic positions in which red color the leading part plays."

Both works – built of aluminum – are constructed as reliefs and intentionally draw the shadows created by the central void into their color concept.

total object 265 is a square with rounded corners. A black band forms an optical frame for a red square inscribed within it that, in turn, encompasses a square void. A strong spatial effect emerges. »total object 265« as well as instant vision 83 are currently on view in the presentation 360°: The Collection Returns."

"The show set presents a new group of works by the artist, who departs the three-dimensional “frame-like form“ for the first time. The relief, which has been typical of him so far, remains in the background, and as a result a new window opens up to geometric abstract painting.

Miller focuses on a quiet, clear, minimal composition of two overlapping rectangular colour fields in his new series. The experiment swings between shade in shade and high-contrast associations and let thecolours take on a main role. This play is counteracted by the rigor of the identical arrangements.

This results in an optical colour effect, which is reminiscent of Joseph Albers‘ “Hommage to the Square“ for instance. The strategy of repetition is quite explicit in Minimal and Conceptual Art. The eye and its own aesthetic sense are being challenged, not only through the direct, industrial and chromatic appearance (...)"

Galleria Alessandro de March, Milan

1st February 2012 - 30th March 2012

Gallery Alessandro De March presents the second solo show of Berlin artist Gerold Miller with a new cicle of sculptures from the series Total Object.

These art works arise from a double consideration: on one hand the industrial production methods, on the other hand those serial and abstracts mechanisms that imperceptibly regulate social processes and reality. The two-dimensional nature of these wall objects is expression of the tendency to frontality typical of our hectic visual culture.

In this way Gerold Miller´s works show how the path towards non-objective art bring back to objective reality and to the re-appropriation of pre-existing shapes and languages to the art history.

"... By way of a selection of characteristic works, the exhibition The Hirsch–Index. "The Art of Quotation" investigates the ways in which artistic creativity and strategies of artists have evolved over the foregoing decades. The question as to models of style, form and motif is shifted to the foreground. As part of the discourse on the claim to originality of works of art and the role of the author, numerous exhibitions took place during the 1970s that dealt with such topics as the original, the after-image, the quote and the copy. In view of a flood of images and the simultaneous intensification of the use of quotation in contemporary art, a new look into this theme seems essential and reasonable..."
